Culture Spears have confirmed that they will depart for Zimbabwe today to perform at the NAMA music awards. The Botswana High Commission in Zimbabwe has facilitated the trip, which would also boost a cultural exchange programme. While in Zimbabwe, the group will interact with a Zimbabwean group, Amavithikazi and the duo will hold two combined shows.
In an interview, the groups leader, Kabelo Mogwe said the Department of Culture reserved their flights for today and said they were certain that the trip will go ahead as planned without any hitches. He said they were earlier concerned about their safety and said the involvement of the Botswana Embassy allayed their fears. Mogwe said this was not the first time the group had been invited to perform in Zimbabwe.
He said in the past they received several invitations from the neighbouring country but declined owing to political instability in the country then. He said while in Zimbabwe they would go for interviews with several radio stations and will also be on Good Morning Zimbabwe aired by Zimbabwe television. Their main theatre of operation will undoubtedly be their appearance at the NAMA awards.
They will depart for Botswana on Monday. The group has become popular by brandishing notable hits since the release of their debut album Korone followed by Kulenyane and their latest release, Khudu. Since their first album, Korone, the group has earned itself recognition beyond borders as one of the most accomplished traditional music groups, if not the most notable in the region.
